This is one of the most common questions we get asked in consultations — and the short answer is yes, but timing matters.
## The old advice vs. what we know now
For years, the standard advice was to never combine Vitamin C and retinol because of pH conflicts. Modern formulations have largely solved this, and most stable Vitamin C and retinol products can coexist in a routine — just not necessarily in the same application.
## The simplest approach
Use Vitamin C in the morning, under sunscreen, where it works as an antioxidant and helps protect against UV-triggered damage throughout the day. Use retinol at night, when your skin is in repair mode and won’t be exposed to sunlight (retinol can increase photosensitivity).
## If you want to use both at night
If you prefer using both in the evening, apply Vitamin C first, let it fully absorb (about 10–15 minutes), then follow with retinol. Start slowly — two to three times a week — and build up tolerance before going nightly.
## When to get professional guidance
If your skin is sensitive, compromised, or you’re new to actives altogether, it’s worth getting a proper skin consultation before building a routine like this. We can assess your skin’s current tolerance and build a sequence that works for you specifically, rather than a generic recommendation.
